PORTLAND, Maine (AP)   Hospital officials say Maine’s first baby born in 2018 was delivered in Portland hospital just over three hours into the new year.

Baby Jaxon was delivered by Monmouth resident Anya with her husband standing by her side early Monday morning. Maine Medical Center spokesman Matt Wickenheiser says the new family is very happy and the baby is sleeping peacefully.

Wickenheiser says the couples lucky enough to have the first baby of the new year typically receive gifts from hospital staff.

Two babies were also born Monday morning at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor–one in a vehicle in the hospital’s parking lot and one inside the hospital.
