NAPLES, Maine — A Portland man who was allegedly on the run from a federal halfway house is facing multiple charges after causing a three-vehicle, head-on crash in Naples Sunday night and sparking an hour-long standoff on a nearby dock.

According to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and Naples Fire and Rescue responded to a report of a head-on collision on Roosevelt Trail (Route 302) near Saw Mill Lane at approximately 7:16 p.m. on Sunday, May 24.

Witnesses told emergency dispatchers that one of the drivers fled the scene immediately after the crash. Following tips from witnesses, deputies tracked the fleeing driver to a residential yard on Saw Mill Lane.

The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Joshua Morin of Portland, then ran to the end of a dock and refused to surrender to law enforcement. A sheriff’s deputy on the scene who is also a trained crisis negotiator engaged with Morin, eventually convincing him to surrender peacefully after more than an hour.

Investigators say Morin was driving a 2011 Chevy Malibu at a high rate of speed when he crossed into the oncoming lane and struck a 2022 Subaru Forester head-on.

The occupants of the Subaru, Louis Caruso, 83, and his wife Lisa Caruso, 84, both of Cumberland, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. They were transported by Naples Rescue to a local hospital.

A third vehicle, a 2011 Honda CRV driven by 21-year-old Miles Ferrant of Naples, was following the Subaru and struck the rear of the vehicle immediately after the initial impact. Ferrant was treated at the scene for minor injuries and released. Officials noted that all three vehicles involved were completely totaled.

Following his arrest, authorities discovered that Morin was listed as missing from a Federal Correctional halfway house in Portland. The U.S. Marshals Service has been notified of his apprehension.

Morin was taken to Bridgton Hospital for treatment of minor injuries before being booked into the Cumberland County Jail. He has been charged with:

  • Operating Under the Influence (Drugs)

  • Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office states that the crash remains under investigation and additional charges may be filed at a later date.
