Portland Mayor Kate Snyder will not be seeking re-election in 2023.

Snyder informed the Portland City Council of her decision on Monday.

The decision came as a result of changes proposed by the Portland Charter Commission which would alter the power structure in city government.

If approved, a new executive mayor position would be established. That person would have the ability to veto ordinances and nominate department heads but wouldn’t be a member of the city council.

Voters will have the final say on the proposals in November.

Snyder said her opposition to the proposal is not out of self-interest. She says she wants to take a step back to allow voters to understand the proposed changes and how her plans fit in with the changes.
