Portland mulls using eminent domain to reclaim Bayside lot

A hearing will be held Wednesday by the Portland City Council to discuss a proposal to reclaim a vacant lot in bayside by eminent domain.

The Portland Press Herald reports that the property was going to be developed but that project fell apart.

In exchange for the property, the city plans on paying three limited liability company’s with an interest in the property only $10 each, citing that the property at 59 Somerset Street has a negative fair market value.

Portland is currently embroiled in a lawsuit over the failed redevelopment of the property which was intended to have housing and retail space.

The city is considering building a parking garage on the property.
