A 21-year-old person is dead after being found by Portland Police lying in the breakdown lane of I-295 adjacent to the Tukey’s Bridge walking path.

Officers say they were called to the scene just before 10 last night on a report of an injured person, and the person later died at Maine Medical Center.

Police say a suspect has been taken into custody and there is no danger to the public.

An autopsy is being performed today, and the official cause and manner of death will be determined by the state Medical Examiner.

An investigation is ongoing.

The I-295 exit to Washington Avenue was closed until mid-morning Thursday.
