Portland Police were involved in the effort to tracked down Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Mangione was on the run for a week after the shooting death in New York, and Portland Police Chief Mark Dubois tells The WGAN Morning News, that one of their officers helped out with the initial search.
“Interestingly enough, we have somebody in the police department who’s a technology expert, works in our Criminal Investigative Division, and he was contacted, and he started working on it right away,” said Dubois. “He’s like a national expert. So, he was working on some leads for the New York PD that night. So, we were slightly involved in this, one of our officers was, which is super interesting for us.”
Mangione was identified by a McDonald’s employee in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where he was arrested Monday. Dubois says public assistance can often be crucial in tracking down criminals.
“There’s so many eyes and ears out there, people paying attention and seeing something like this on the news (and) want to help,” Dubois said.
“You know, coincidentally, they run into the person for whatever reason, and they make the notification to the local authorities, and it just kind of goes from there. So having the public involved is critical for the success of finding people like this.”
