Portland police say group shot fireworks at officers responding to shooting victim

Portland police say one man was shot in Kennedy Park the night of July Fourth.

The department says it happened just after 11 p.m. In the area of Kennedy Park and Smith Street. A group allegedly assaulted the victim while he was on the ground.

The victim, 35-year-old Bashir Hassan, was in stable condition at Maine Medical Center on Tuesday.

Police said a crowd had formed at the scene, with some people shooting fireworks off at officers. Officers used pepper balls in response. No officers were seriously injured.

The suspect in the shooting was described as a black male, about 6 feet tall, with a large build. Police don’t believe there’s any danger to the public.
