Police in Portland say a six-year-old girl was attacked after she answered a knock at the door Monday morning.

Police received a call around 6:40 a.m. Monday for a reported assault on Monroe Court. After the alleged assault, an adult confronted the intruder, who then fled.

The victim was taken to Maine Medical Center out of an abundance of caution and was evaluated and released.

Police say they’re searching for a white male in his 40s or 50s. They believe he was wearing a red and black long-sleeved checkered shirt and a black and white hat. He also had gray beard scruff on his chin. He was last seen fleeing Monroe Court towards Anderson Street and may be riding a bicycle.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact Portland police.
