A man is dead after being shot by police in Portland following a chase Thursday night.

Police say they were called to Commercial Street where they found 73-year-old Jacob Hastings shirtless, who’d been threatening restaurant patrons with a firearm.

They say Hastings drove off to the Casco Bay Lines parking lot, and when entering the lot, crashed and disabled the car.

Officers say Hastings then fled on foot with officers chasing him into the outdoor terminal of Casco Bay Lines while issuing commands to him.

They say Hastings failed to follow commands, reached into his waistband, and presented his hands as though he had a firearm in the direction of officers and was shot.

Hastings was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police later recovered a gun in one of several vehicles Hastings had reportedly stolen

Officers Anthony George, Jordin Jackson and Greg Ishihara have all been placed on administrative leave as is standard practice when officers are involved in a deadly force incident.

The Office of the Attorney General will be investigating the use of deadly force.
