PORTLAND, Maine (AP) School officials in a Maine city say they want more time before deciding whether to equip police officers with body cameras inside schools.

The Portland Public School Board voted Tuesday to ask the police department to delay giving school resource officers the cameras so they could have more time to better understand how the footage will be stored and who will have access to it.

The city said Wednesday that school resource officers would continue working in Deering and Portland high schools without cameras until an agreement is reached with the school board.

Portland Police Chief Frank Clark tells The Bangor Daily News that equipping officers with cameras would enhance transparency while providing “a valuable means of objective documentation of police interactions.”
