A Portland public school employee is facing several charges including sexually exploiting a minor.

Portland police say 32-year-old Benjamin Conroy was arrested on Wednesday.

On October 5th, police received a report of disturbing images shared by a man over an online dating platform, including one depicting a child engaged in a sexual act, with the background suggesting it may have been taken inside of a school.

On October 8th, officers responded to a call that afternoon about a man exposing himself to a woman near the Western Promenade, then pressing himself against her. Witnesses came to her after she screamed for help and helped police find the suspect, who was nearby.

Conroy was arrested at his residence on Stevens Avenue on charges of Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, Dissemination of Sexually Explicit Material, and Possession of Sexually Explicit Material.

He’s being held at York County Jail on $25,000 cash bail.

Conroy was placed on administrative leave from his job with Portland Public Schools, and was prohibited from being on any school property and contacting students, family members or staff.

An investigation into the images shared is ongoing to try to identify a possible victim and location.

“What we understand has occurred is contrary to our top priority of ensuring all our students are in a safe and supportive environment at all times when they are in our care,” said Xavier Botana, Superintendent of Portland Public Schools.

“In addition to assisting law enforcement with their investigation, we are also conducting our own internal investigation to determine what occurred and to understand any changes we should put in place. We are committed to conducting a full review and doing everything in our power to ensure that nothing like this will happen again.”
