The resident at a Portland group home for people with mental illness who’s accused of killing an employee has made his first court appearance.

Armando Negrete appeared virtually from jail for Wednesday’s bail hearing at the Cumberland County Courthouse in Portland.

A judge ordered Negrete to be held without bail and that he undergo a competency evaluation.

Negrete faces murder charges in the stabbing death Monday of 40-year-old Marlene McNeill of Gorham, who was an employee of Shalom House at 503 Woodford Street, where Negrete was a resident.

Another bail hearing will be held next month.
