The chance for precipitation on Thanksgiving Day in Maine is very strong, but it’s not certain whether the state will get rain or snow.
AccuWeather senior meteorologist Joe Lundberg says we’ll likely get both snow and rain, depending on location, but there’s a question about what the coast will see. “In the foothills and up in the mountains, this is mostly going to be a snow event,” said Lundberg. “Along the coast, I would lean more toward it being rain, but in between, that’s going to be a really tough question.”
Lundberg says computer models are divided, with some showing snow while others show mostly rain hitting the state. “I suspect the truth is it usually lies somewhere in between those two extremes,” Lundgerg. “I think you’ve got to include both forms of precipitation in the forecast for Thursday.”
Meanwhile, meteorologists at CBS 13 News are closely watching a potential nor’easter for Thanksgiving and Black Friday. They say the European model consistently shows a significant nor’easter with a track close to the Maine coast Thursday into Friday. It would bring heavy coastal rain and strong winds, inland snow that changes to rain, and heavy mountain snow.
The CBS 13 meteorologists say the American model consistently shows a much weaker storm with a further offshore track, which would bring light amounts of rain or snow beginning late on Thanksgiving and continue longer into Friday.
AccuWeather’s Lundberg thinks the mountains of Maine will get enough snow on Thanksgiving to keep skiers happy for Thanksgiving weekend. He says there’ll be colder than normal weather following Thanksgiving Day.
