MACHIASPORT, Maine (AP) A number of Maine county businesses say they have taken a huge hit from the abrupt closure of the Downeast Correctional Facility.

Machiasport food suppliers Maine Wild and the Lobster Trap opened their doors Monday for the first time since Thursday, saying the sudden closure of the facility took away staff on a work-release program at the prison. Both businesses tell WCSH-TV that Republican Gov. Paul LePage’s administration did not warn them that the prison would close, and they opened having no idea where their staff was.

Vice President of Operations for the Lobster Trap Tom Platt says three-fourths of his staff was comprised of inmates on work-release. Maine Wild officials say they have now difficulty keeping up with orders and only have enough staff for one shift.
