OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine (AP) The body of a firefighter who was killed while battling an apartment fire has been escorted from a funeral home in Dover, New Hampshire, to Old Orchard Beach, Maine.

Firetrucks from several communities were posted along highway overpasses during the procession held Sunday afternoon for 32-year-old Berwick Fire Capt. Joel Barnes.

Barnes’ body was moved to an Old Orchard Beach funeral home, where a private family ceremony will be held this week.

Barnes died and four other firefighters were injured in the blaze in Berwick on Friday.

Berwick Fire Chief Dennis Plante says Barnes jumped on a fellow firefighter to protect him from the heat and flames, and he “died a hero.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
