AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Maine apartment renters would be protected from sexual harassment by landlords under a new law in the state.

The Maine Legislature has voted in support of legislation by Democratic Sen. Louie Luchini of Ellsworth that is designed to protect tenants from such harassment. Luchini says low-income tenants are especially vulnerable to sexual harassment, and his proposal makes clear that any landlord who harasses is breaking the law.

The Maine Senate Majority Office says there aren’t any protections under Maine law for tenants who have been harassed by a landlord or a landlord’s agent. There’s also no defense against an eviction in retaliation for reporting harassment.

The proposal is headed to Democratic Gov. Janet Mills for possible signature.
