A Maine doctor has been charged with illegally distributing opioids.

The U.S. Department of Justice said Wednesday that 52-year-old Merideth Norris of Kennebunk, a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, allegedly prescribed opioids and other controlled substances to patients.

Prosecutors say they were distributed outside the usual course of professional practice and without a legitimate medical purpose.

Norris appeared in court on Wednesday. She’s charged with 10 counts of illegal distribution of opioids and other controlled substances.

If convicted, she faces up to 20 years in prison.

This is the first arrest by the New England Prescription Opioid Strike Force, which was launched over the summer.
