Portland is likely to break a record for heat today.

AccuWeather Meteorologist Heather Zehr says the extreme heat warning – 11am-8 pm – is a reflection of temperatures reaching 96 degrees, potentially breaking the 1976 record of 93 degrees.

Humidity will make it feel significantly hotter, possibly up to 105 degrees. The heat index will be about 10 degrees above actual temperatures.

And Zehr says there won’t even be any break at the coast, where there’s normally a cool breeze. “The winds are going to be coming in from the west, which is going to be just strong enough, I think, to really keep a lot of the sea breezes at bay,” said Zehr. “So, it’s just hot everywhere today.”

Meanwhile, the likely record-breaking heat will not be lingering for an extended time in Maine, as Zehr says conditions will change in the next couple of days, which will bring a big cool down.

“So, we’re already starting off warm tomorrow, getting back to around the 90-degree mark,” Zehr said. “But we are starting to see a few more clouds around and I think that’s followed by at least a lot of higher clouds on Thursday, and a front is going to be south of us, and that’s really going to cool things off.”

After triple digits heat indexes today, temperatures will drop to the mid and upper 60s by Friday and Saturday in Portland.

For the record, the last time it hit 100 degrees at the Portland Jetport was July 22, 2011.
