The Renys downtown Portland store is now closed, having permanently shut down on Tuesday, a day earlier than the previously announced New Year’s Eve closing.

The company announced over the summer that it would close the downtown location because sales had not rebounded since the COVID-19 pandemic.

A sign on the front door says the early closing is due to illness and a staff shortage.

Renys thanked customers for their support during 15 years at the Congress Street location.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the Portland Renys will be permanently closing sooner than expected,” the retailer said on social media.

The downtown location opened in 2011.

The city has been grappling with a number of vacancies downtown, notably on Congress Street.
