PORTLAND, Maine (AP) A panel created to examine racial disparities in Maine says lawmakers can get started in addressing those concerns by passing more than two dozen bills.

The report by the Permanent Commission on the Status of Racial, Indigenous and Maine Tribal Populations says 26 bills that deserve immediate attention can address gaps in wages, health and incarceration rates, among other things.

Among the report’s findings: Black Mainers are six times more likely to be incarcerated than white Mainers, and 20 times more likely to contract COVID-19 during the pandemic.

The commission was created by Democratic Gov. Janet Mills.
