AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) A Democratic-led bill for paid sick leave in Maine is advancing as Republicans go public with their own ideas.

Republicans told reporters Tuesday they want to work with Democrats, whose November wins won them the Legislature.

A legislative committee recently voted 8-4 on party lines supporting the bill.

Democrats propose employees earning one hour of paid leave for every 30 hours worked. Employers could cap usage to 40 hours annually.

Republicans want to raise the rate to every 50 hours worked, for up to 40 hours annually. Republicans also want workers to wait longer before earning leave.

Democratic Sen. Rebecca Millett says Democrats offered compromises such as excluding seasonal employees. She said Republicans should approach her with ideas.

Supporters say if lawmakers don’t act, the matter could go to voters.
