Rockland Police Chief Says School Bus Death Investigation ‘Very Time Consuming’

The Rockland Police Chief says immediate answers will not be provided about the incident last Friday, where a 12-year-old boy died after being hit by a school bus.

Police Chief Tim Carroll says all information about the incident is not being shared because of the need to properly conduct an investigation.

“I know people want answers immediately and I simply have to tell you that it won’t/can’t happen,” said Carroll in a statement released Wednesday.

Carroll said the investigation will be “very time-consuming” in order to get it right.

He also said rumors that enflame emotions are not helping the process.

“Let the investigation tell the story,” said Carroll. “I assure you, we will complete a thorough investigation and provide a true series of events that led to this horrific event. ”

Meanwhile, a crash reports shows the school bus driver, Jeffrey Colburn, told investigators that he “simply didn’t see” the child.

Brayden Callahan, 12, was hit while crossing in front of the bus.

The report  states investigators reviewed camera footage from inside the bus, which showed Colburn was leaning too far to the right to keep his eyes on the road after the child had gotten off the bus.

The video also showed the front crossing arm was no longer deployed. The front passenger side tire of the bun ran over the child, followed by the two rear passenger tires.
