Central Maine Power says its customers are being targeted by scammers.

Customers have been receiving calls from people claiming to be from CMP, but they don’t work for the company.

One of the scams involves callers threatening to shut off power to customers’ homes unless they receive an immediate payment using a prepaid debit card.

The company says if there are payment issues and you’re hearing about it for the first time, the company isn’t going to disconnect service immediately.

The company says there’s a process with various steps they must go through before disconnecting service.
