(WGAN) Police say one man was taken into custody peacefully following a standoff that prompted several schools in the area to lock down.

The incident also led to the closure of Long Plains Road between Parker Farms and Limington Roads.

According to media reports, police were using a loudspeaker to negotiate with someone at a home on Long Plains Road. Just before 2:30 p.m., police say 40-year-old Michael Landry surrendered and was taken into custody.

Police said the standoff started around 7 a.m. due to a reported assault. Buxton Police Chief Troy Cline told the media Landry was hiding in a shed at the home but eventually surrendered.

Landry is charged with domestic violence aggravated assault and is being held at York County Jail.

The district says the schools were placed on lockdown out of an abundance of caution.
