On Sunday, dozens of people came together for a “Ruck to Remember,” a 16 mile trek across Portland and South Portland honoring fallen service members from Maine.
According to our info partners at CBS13, The 60 person trekking group was made up of veterans, active service members, gold star families, and community members.
Every person trekking wore a backpack to carry tribute stones in honor of the fallen.
Greg Johnson, the executive director of the Summit Project, said the trek focuses less on mourning the sacrifices of the brave men and women, and instead, serves more as a celebration of the men and women who have lived among us.
Johnson says everyone who participates in these events are required to learn everything they can about the fallen service member they are representing, as well as physically carry the tribute stones on a trek or adventure. Once completing the trek or adventure, they are to write a letter back to the family.
Johnson said the tribute stones that are carried Sunday will then head to another event happening in upstate New York where the tribute stones will continue on treks around the country.
