RANGELEY, Maine (AP) – Police are searching in western Maine for a sex offender who skipped a meeting with probation officer and another man who’s on bail on a sexual assault charge.

Officials say Shawn Batchelder, who served time for rape and was last seen in Augusta on Sept. 12, is believed to be travelling with Steven Petersen, who’s currently on bail in York County.

The search began Thursday when police received information that the wanted men may have been dropped off near the Appalachian Trail in the Byron area. Deputies, state police, Maine game wardens, and U.S. Border Patrol are all involved in the search.
