President Trump will lift some tariffs on Canadian goods in a bid to help Maine Sen. Susan Collins and other Republicans win races in battleground states.
Reporting in the Wall Street Journal on Friday cites people familiar with the administration’s plan to lift 50 percent tariffs on some Canadian imports.
The paper reported that the tariffs on agricultural and forest products will likely be lifted, while tariffs on other Canadian goods could be raised to make up the difference.
Collins praised the decision, saying the exemptions are aimed at benefiting the blueberry, potato, apple and seaweed industries.
In her statement, Collins said:
“I have asked for tariff relief for these important products and stressed the burdens additional costs impose on Maine businesses and families. I will continue working directly with Administration officials to seek additional relief from tariffs and encourage a broader trade agreement with Canada, our neighbor, ally, and largest trading partner.”
Recent polling has Collins virtually neck-and-neck with Democratic challenger Troy Jackson as she seeks a sixth term in office.
A FOX News poll released this week showed both Collins and Jackson tied at 49 percent.
