Maine Republican Senator Susan Collins says the Trump administration might be breaking the law in attempts to block government spending.
Politico reports that Collins believes efforts by Elon Musk and his team to block spending already approved by Congress are unconstitutional, and will end up in court.
“I think it’s pretty clear that this violates Article One of the Constitution,” said Sen. Collins in an interview. “You would see lawsuits…A lot of these issues are going to end up in court.”
Collins chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee, which determines how federal money will be spent.
Musk and his DOGE team are now trying to freeze spending, reduce the federal workforce and downsize or eliminate federal agencies.
Collins says she has not spoken to Musk since meeting with him late last year.
In a separate issue, Collins is not optimistic about reaching an agreement to fund the government as lawmakers face a federal shutdown deadline in just over three weeks.
Politico reports Collins told reporters Wednesday afternoon that funding negotiations with Democrats “are not going well”
