PORTLAND, Maine (AP)   Maine’s U.S. senators are calling on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to focus more research on the warming temperatures of the Gulf of Maine.

Republican Sen. Susan Collins and independent Sen. Angus King made the call to NOAA on Monday. They say the agency should prioritize the warming of the gulf in the wake of a discovery by Canadian scientists of record-breaking temperatures in the deep water flowing into the body of water.

The Gulf of Maine touches Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Canada is the site of several important commercial fisheries, including the fishery for lobsters.

Collins and King say extreme environmental changes in the Gulf of Maine could jeopardize Maine’s key marine industries. They say more research will put the state in position to prepare and adapt.
