The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office says an inmate tried to escape custody while hand cuffed and shackled.

It happened around 4 p.m. Monday while inmates were being loaded onto the sheriff’s office’s transport bus to return to the jail.

While inmates were leaving the courthouse on Newbury St. in Portland, one of them tried to run away but was quickly caught by officers.

The inmate was identified in a press release from the sheriff’s office as 35-year-old Rocco Langella of South Portland.

The release did not mention if new charges would be filed against him.

The release said the incident is still under investigation.
