GREENVILLE, Maine (AP) – The 100-mile Wilderness Sled Dog Race in Maine’s Moosehead Lake region is kaput for this season.
Officials said Monday that recent warmer weather and rain have created trail conditions that are not safe for mushers and their dogs.
Amy Dugan, one of the race organizers, said canceling the 12th annual event was “heartbreaking.”
The race was supposed to begin on Saturday.
This has been an up and down winter. Maine experienced a prolonged cold stretch from December into January, but there have been several warmups since then.
