South Portland café hailed for its bagels closes doors after 20 years

A café that’s become a fixture in a South Portland neighborhood has closed its doors for good.

The owners of 158 Picket Street Café announced on social media that the closure is a result of the combined effect of COVID-19 on the industry, the labor shortage, and rising cost of goods. The owners, who also run The Bread + Butter Catering Co. in South Portland, said they wanted to refocus efforts on their other endeavors as well.

The café, whose chili-garlic cream cheese and handmade bagels once earned it a shout-out in the New York Times, celebrated its 20th anniversary this year.
