SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (WGAN) South Portland is the latest city in Maine to introduce new emergency measures as the number of coronavirus cases continues to rise in Maine, especially in Cumberland County.

The order goes into effect Friday at noon. According to a press release from the city, the restrictions are similar to those being implemented in Portland. They call for residents to remain at their residences, except for outdoor exercise and essential tasks like grocery shopping.

The city says that anyone venturing outdoors should be cautious and remain 6 feet away from others at all times.

The order doesn’t prohibit residents from using parks and recreational facilities, but does not allow for the use of equipment in those places.

It also places restrictions on visitors at senior health care facilities, and prohibits the use of reusable bags at retail locations.

Unlike some other municipalities, this order has no specified duration. In the statement, City Manager Scott Morelli says the restrictions “shall remain in full force and effect until either rescinded or modified by me or the emergency proclamation is terminated by the City Council.”
