BANGOR, Maine (AP) One of the largest and oldest summer fairs in the state of Maine is underway.

The Bangor State Fair began on Friday and runs until Aug. 5. The agricultural fair at Bass Park usually draws more than 40,000 people, which is more than the city’s population.

Fair organizers say the Bangor State Fair dates back at least as far as 1849. The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry describes it as “a large family fair” that includes a midway, animal exhibits, stage shows, horse pulling and more.
