State Weighs Rules for Labs that Extract Pot Concentrates

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP)   Maine lawmakers are considering regulations that would provide legitimacy for labs that extract concentrates from marijuana to create pot-infused foods and oils.

The Portland Press Herald reports that the Legislature’s health committee endorsed a bill this month providing a pathway for extraction labs to operate legally. It would require pot processors to get a license from the state and equipment safety certifications.

The state Health Department adopted rules last year that would have cracked down on extraction labs, which it said were operating in violation of state law. Those rules were suspended while lawmakers wrote the new proposed regulations.

After receiving final approval from the health committee, the bill would still need to be approved by the full Legislature and the governor.
