PORTLAND, Maine (AP)   A swift storm is bringing strong winds and rain to southern and coastal parts of Maine, as officials warn residents against driving through flooded streets.

The National Weather Service issued a coastal flood advisory until Saturday afternoon and warned of coastal erosion, significant splash-over and flooding of low areas along the shore.

In Portland, city officials closing several streets due to flooding by a tidal storm surge that peaked midday. Nearly two dozen flights out of Portland International Jetport were cancelled.

Winds were also whipping in coastal Maine, where hundreds of people gathered for a fishing industry conference in Rockport. Many people arrived from Maine’s coastal islands, which can only access the mainland by boat or small plane. Several attendees worried they wouldn’t be able to return home on Friday.
