LEWISTON, Maine (AP) Officials in a Maine school district are looking to change their field trip policy following the drowning of a student.

Lewiston Superintendent Bill Webster announced the proposed changes Monday, which some School Committee members say are too extreme.

The changes include banning swimming or boating unless an outside group can provide safety, stopping trips to water parks and increasing the number of chaperones.

Webster’s announcement comes after 13-year-old Rayan Issa drowned during a school outing in June. The Lewiston Middle School student was playing football with friends when he got into deep water at the Range Pond State Park in Poland.

School Committee member Tina Hutchinson says she cannot support the current proposal.

She says while the death of student is a tragedy, it’s important that the district doesn’t overreact.
