A 140-year ban on Sunday hunting in Maine is being challenged, with the state’s highest court taking up the issue this week.

According to the Bangor Daily News, a family is suing the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife over the law. They claim that a constitutional amendment enacted in 2021 that guaranteed a right to food means Mainers should be able to hunt any day of the week.

Supporters of the existing law, including hikers and private landowners, say they prefer having one a day week when they don’t encounter hunters.
