SOUTH PORTLAND (WGME) — The Maine Department of Environmental Protection is warning Mainers about algae blooms that could be harmful to you and your pet.
The blue-green algae is scientifically known as cyanobacteria, and exists in all Maine lakes. Like most algae, it is relatively harmless in low concentrations. However, in higher concentrations it can cause skin irritation, rashes, and is particularly toxic to dogs and can kill them if ingested.
The algae is photosynthetic, meaning that growth and bloom of the bacteria is accelerated with prolonged sunlight and heat. With an already particular dry and hot summer already, the algae is expected to have an unusually high-yield in bodies of water state-wide.
The Maine DEP has provided warning signs of the algae. Noting that common signs of the algae are uncommonly green or cloudy lakes or ponds, foul or strange smelling water, or if you can see scum on the surface.
