GRAY, Maine (AP) A routine traffic stop in Maine led to the seizure of cash, guns and 500 grams of fentanyl, law enforcement officials said.

Three people were arrested following a traffic stop Sunday in Gray, and a fourth was arrested when police searched a motel room in Naples. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 80 to 100 times stronger than morphine.

Capt. Donald Foss of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department said the arrests reflect “the extent of the drug problem in the Sebago Lake area.”

“We do anticipate that the impact of this seizure will prevent several overdoses and overdose-related deaths in the coming days and weeks. Unfortunately, we also know that this relief is temporary and a new flow of drugs will soon follow,” he said.

All four suspects were taken to the Cumberland County Jail, where they awaited their first court appearances.
