Triple-A expects a steep decline in Thanksgiving travel because of the pandemic.

The association says the number of New Englanders who travel this year is expected to be down by more than 9 percent compared to last year.

Triple-A Northern New England says it’s expected to be the largest year-over-year decline since the 2008 recession, which caused a 28 percent drop in Thanksgiving travel.

They say air travel and other modes of transportation, such as buses and trains, will be greatly impacted.

The vast majority of New England residents who are planning to travel, 92 percent of them, are expected to do so by car. In 2019, 86 percent of local thanksgiving travelers drove to their destinations.
