A pair of Maine schools were closed Monday because of the number of students who have called out sick with the flu.

Sanford Christian Academy says it’s taking Monday off to clean and disinfect the classrooms, while Edna Libby Elementary School in Standish is doing the same.

Schools leaders at Edna Libby said Friday that 35 percent of the student population was sick. There are 280 students enrolled at the school. Monday marked the third-stright day of cleaning at the school.

In Sanford, officials said it wasn’t just students who were battling the flu. They said teachers at the school were calling out sick as well.

According to the Maine CDC’s Influenza Surveillance Report for the week ending Jan. 25, more than 3,000 people had tested positive for the flu virus in Maine this season. About 200 people had to be hospitalized and 10 influenza deaths this season were reported.
