Police are working to locate two people who went missing after their car was swept away by floodwaters in the town of Mexico.

Maine State Police say the driver of a vehicle with four occupants was traveling on Route 2 in Mexico just before 5 p.m. Monday. The driver started to turn around after attempting to cross Red Bridge into Rumford when the vehicle was carried away by rising flood waters from the Swift River.

Two of the occupants were rescued and treated at the hospital for hypothermia. The other two are still missing.

The area has been hit hard by flooding from Monday’s storm, with boats being used to aid residents and several roads and residential areas closed off. A shelter was set up at Mountain Valley High School.
