PORTLAND, Maine (AP) Maine’s public university system has received $1.5 million from the federal government to help prevent burnout among medical professionals.

The money is part of the American Rescue Plan and is going to the University of Maine System. Maine independent Sen. Angus King and Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree said the money will support training development in health professions and nurse training.

The funds will be awarded over three years and will support the Health and Public Safety Workforce Resiliency Training Program. That program is designed to reduce burnout and improve resilience for people such as health care students and professionals, the lawmakers said.

The UMaine System will “support our state’s health care workforce and provide more resources to protect them as they help Maine people heal,” King said. Pingree said the program will help in “strengthening and supporting our overworked and overburdened health care professionals.”
