Unhoused man charged with assaulting people at Portland apartment building while holding a machete

Police have charged an unhoused man after he allegedly assaulted people in a Portland apartment building while wielding a machete.

Police responded to Franklin Towers on Cumberland Avenue for a report of a fight around 9 p.m. Wednesday. Police said the suspect, 38-year-old Ahmed Ismail, was assaulting people, but didn’t use the machete in the assaults. Minor injuries were reported.

Ismail was charged with assault, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, and violating conditions of release.

He was then charged with drug possession and trafficking in prison contraband after being brought to Cumberland County Jail.
