A man from Virginia was arrested after he reportedly tried to steal an Auburn fire truck.

It happened after fire fighters responded to a report of people stuck in an elevator at Auburn Esplanade, an apartment community for the elderly.

Police say 35-year-old Dana Gifford of Barboursville, Virginia climbed into the driver’s seat.

He got out of the truck after being confronted by a firefighter but said he had intended to steal it.

According to the Portland Press Herald, the man fled the scene but was located in the area by police after a brief search.

Police later learned that Gifford was wanted in several states for a variety of charges.

Gifford was charged with attempted theft and released from jail after posting $2,500 cash bail.
