Visitors head home as Maine sees a soggy end to Labor Day Weekend

KENNEBUNK (WGME) – Monday was a soggy end to Labor Day weekend, and now Maine’s roads are busy with visitors heading home.

The Maine Turnpike Authority planned for more than 1 million cars to hit the road this weekend in Vacationland, including on I-95 South in Kennebunk, as summer vacation comes to a close for many.

Officials say the roads Monday are expected to be most congested from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. heading south.

All construction activities have also been suspended for the long weekend on the turnpike as well, but drivers still need to follow the posted work zone speed limits.

If drivers are filling up their tanks Monday, AAA says the average price per gallon of gas in the state is $3.87, which is $0.08 higher than the national average and up from $3.11 last year.

Prices are down from last week and last month, which is partially fueling the busy weekend.

“Revenge travel is absolutely a big factor in all of the big holiday weekends this summer,” Doug Shupe with AAA said. “We have continually seen an increase in numbers in travelers for Memorial Day, for Fourth of July, we’re expecting to see that again for Labor Day.”
