Wardens Rescue Lost Hiker in Newry


NEWRY, Maine (WGAN)  The Maine Warden Service rescuing a hiker that got lost in Newry on Wednesday.

The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife says 29-year-old Thomas Dilger was hiking in the early afternoon when he used his cellphone to call for help when he got lost on Grafton Loop Trail.

Dilger told wardens he got lost near the side of Puzzle Mount and wardens say they began their search for the Worcester, Massachusetts man just after 3 p.m.

Wardens initially began their search using snowmobiles, breaking a trail in three feet of snow for about a mile and a half before they couldn’t be used any more.  Rescuers then searched for several hours using snowshoes and were able to find Dilger around 11 p.m.

After the eight-hour search, wardens say Dilger was slightly hypothermic, but did not receive medical attention.
