Maine wildlife officials say a father and son were saved by their lifejackets when their canoe capsized on a pond in Clifton.

Game wardens say 59-year-old Ranjit Pandher and his 9-year-old son were out on Hopkins Pond around 5:15 Sunday evening when their canoe capsized.

The father was able to climb back into the canoe while his son clung to the side. He called 911 and a local contact as well as a firefighter went out on a boat to rescue the pair.

Both were taken to the hospital to be treated for possible hypothermia, but were released later that night.

“The life jackets likely saved their lives,” said Maine Game Warden Sergeant Alan Gillis. “This time of year, hypothermia sets in quickly, and you lose your ability to swim and stay afloat. This story likely would have had a tragic ending if the Pandhers were not wearing their life jackets.”
