PORTLAND (WGME) – Police say a well-known substance abuse counselor died in a Nobleboro crash Thursday morning.

They say William Ellsworth had been a substance abuse counselor with the Mid Coast Hospital for more than 30 years.

He also worked as a recovery coach for the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office says the 80-year-old from Newcastle was killed while traveling on Route 1 just before 8 Thursday morning.

Deputies say a driver was making a left-hand turn onto Back Meadow Road, and turned into the path of Ellsworth’s SUV.

Deputies say Ellsworth died at the hospital and his wife was transported to Maine Medical Center with several broken bones.

The driver of the other vehicle was treated and released from the hospital.

Maine Medical Center says Ellsworth’s wife, Lois Ellsworth, is in fair condition.
